Obituary of Claire Talan
Claire Marie Kolakowski Talan, of East Brunswick, New Jersey, and Boca Raton, Florida, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on February 6, 2021 at the Parker Residence on River Road in Piscataway. She will be remembered by all as a witty, generous, charming and elegant woman who was devoted to her family. A memorial Mass will be held at St. Bartholomew’s Church in East Brunswick at a later date to be determined due to COVID safety concerns. At that time, burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in East Brunswick. Please visit NeverGone, and search memorials for Claire Talan, where we invite you to leave condolences, memories, and photos at: http://www.never-gone.com/ Claire was born in South Amboy to Paulina Tarlowski (aka Pauline Tarloski) and Casimir (Charles) Kolakowski of South River on October 16, 1926, the seventh of ten children, with whom she enjoyed life long friendships. She graduated from South River High School in 1944 where she was a cheerleader. She was employed by Rutgers University as the secretary to the Head of the Engineering Department for several years. At Rutgers, she met her future husband Walter Talan(C ‘49), who was a student and on the Rutgers football team. They were married for 56 years and spent many happy hours together with family and friends, at home, on the golf course, and on vacations. She also enjoyed gardening, bridge, entertaining, and was always a supporter and fan of Rutgers football. Claire is survived by her beloved family: her five children, Jeffrey Talan and daughter-in-law Carol DeFreitas Talan of Brooklyn, NY; Christine Bethune and son-in-law Duncan Bethune of Chester, NJ; Diane Talan-Whitman and son-in-law Frederick Whitman Jr. of Hillsborough, NJ; James Talan and daughter-in-law Venetia Tosato Talan of New Hope, PA; and Bruce Talan and daughter-in-law Sharon Baber Talan of Neshanic Station, NJ; as well as six grandchildren, Berkeley Bethune of Jersey City, NY, Rachel Bethune of Verona, NJ, Kaitlin Eick of Hillsborough, NJ, Frederick (Trip) Whitman III of Flemington, NJ, Andrew Whitman of Flemington, NJ, and Olivia Talan of Neshanic Station, NJ; and two great-grandchildren, Devon Kelly of Hillsborough, NJ, and Alexander Eick of Hillsborough, NJ. She is preceded in death by her husband Walter Talan of ST&L Associates, as well as her nine siblings: Florence Kolakowski, Theodore Kolakowski, Arthur Kolakowski, Edwin Kolakowski, Henry Kolakowski, Eleanor Kolakowski Barraclough, Anne Kolakowski, Charles Collins, and Daniel Kolakowski.
