Obituary of Albert B. Anderson

Albert Bernhard Anderson, age 90, of East Brunswick, New Jersey passed away on January 6, 2021 after a brief illness. Albert was born at home on October 22, 1930 in Staten Island, NY to Albert Bernhard Anderson, Sr. and Asta Hedvig Anderson. After attending public school in Staten Island, Albert went on to receive his B.A. and B.S. degrees in Education from Wagner College, before earning his Ed. D at Rutgers University where he met his wife, Phyllis. Albert worked for over forty years in education, holding positions as a teacher, assistant superintendent and principal in the Roselle, Sayreville and Plainfield NJ school systems, before retiring from education in 1992. A leader in the field, Albert held positions as the President of the Roselle Teacher's Association and the Plainfield Association of School Administrators and served as the Chairman of the Board for the County Educators Federal Credit Union for 18 years. He was President of the East Brunswick Chapter 4855 of AARP, as well as the Worshipful Master, Chaplain and Marshall for the Milltown Masonic Lodge #294, and the President of the Central Jersey Scottish Rite Club. A devoted husband and father, Albert raised his three daughters, Jennifer, Laura, and Amelia to share his love of British comedies, horror films and reading. He proudly walked each daughter down the aisle at their weddings and was an enthusiastic supporter of their educational, employment, and life achievements. Albert and Phyllis celebrated more than 60 years of marriage and shared a love of travel to such places as Germany, England, Sweden and Denmark, and several elder hostels throughout the United States. The couple created many wonderful memories for their children with their yearly summer vacations on Long Beach Island and annual trips to Atlantic City for the NJ Teacher's convention. A longtime member of MENSA, each day Albert would complete the New York Times crossword puzzle, in pen, no less. A voracious reader, Albert loved mysteries best but read all types of books, as well as his subscriptions to National Geographic, Scientific America, Smithsonian, The New Yorker, Reader's Digest and The New York Times to name just a few. Beloved by birds and squirrels alike, Albert and Phyllis enjoyed watching the daily antics of the wildlife that vied for the corn, birdseed and bread they scattered each morning on the deck outside their kitchen. Albert is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis, his three daughters Jennifer Fountas of Edison NJ, Laura Anderson of Hanover MA, and Amelia Thoms of Bridgewater NJ, and his five grandchildren Christopher Fountas, Xander and Cooper Dawson, and Melanie and Andrew Thoms. His intelligence, kindness and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew and loved him. A private service for family members will be held at an undetermined future date.
