Obituary of Raffaele Roncalli Amici

Raffaele Roncalli Amici, an East Brunswick resident since 1973, passed away in Somerset, New Jersey on September 11, 2018. A native of Italy, Dr. Roncalli obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Perugia in Italy, in 1949. After several years as a researcher at the Veterinary School at the University of Milan, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to attend the University of Georgia, where he received his Master of Science degree. In ensuing years he held several managerial positions with Hoffmann-La Roche, Inc. and Merck & Co., Inc. With Roche he worked in the development of two tranquilizers--Librium and Valium; with Merck, while in charge of international veterinary research, he conducted clinical trials for the development of new veterinary products, including ivermectin, in Europe, Latin America, Australia and Japan.

He was the past President of the New Jersey Society for Parasitology (1972-1973), and a former Chairman of the International Section at the Animal Health Institute in Washington, D.C. He was the author of more than one hundred scientific papers, including "The History of Italian Parasitology," "The History of Japanese Parasitology," and "American Women Pioneers in Veterinary Parasitology." Fluent in seven languages, he was a visiting professor of veterinary parasitology at the University of Naples and the University of Bari. He spent a number of years in Japan where he organized a new veterinary research center and lectured extensively on the history of Japanese veterinary medicine. He served twice as President of the American Veterinary Medical History Society. Until his death, he was the historian of the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists.

Dr. Roncalli was a multi-hobbyist: a collector of medical books, Vatican City stamps, and Japanese prints, and was past President of the Ukiyo-e Society of America (now Japanese Art Society of America).

Dr. Roncalli was predeceased by his parents, Ario and Matilde Roncalli Amici, of Fabriano, Italy, and is survived by LaVerne (nee Schlegel), his loving wife of fifty-eight years, and by his son, Gregory, both of East Brunswick. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Schlegel of East Brunswick; nieces Susan Sciora and Sharon Krauss of Matawan; niece Joann Spinelli of Los Angeles, California, and nieces Daniela Haboyan and Paola Silvestrini of Rome, Italy.

A visitation will be held Friday, September 14th, 2018 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Rezem Funeral Home, 457 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick. A service will be held at Rezem Funeral Home on Saturday, September 15th at 10:30am, followed by burial at Washington Monumental Cemetery in South River.
